I'm English, I have lived here for many years now, but when I lived in England I was so used to high gas prices (it's always been over $6 a gallon since the early 90's and now it's about $8-9 a gallon) that I never really thought about shaking the gas hose when I was done pumping gas; I mean everyone did it, you finished pumping gas and then you raised the hose up and drained the rest out of it, everyone did, I didn't look weird, if you got an extra mile or two each time out of shaking that hose then over the year it was worth it.
I went to the office at the last minute yesterday and left my wallet at home, I only had $10 in my pocket and the light had come on warning of low fuel almost as soon as I got on the freeway - nice. So I pulled into a gas station and put in $10 worth, I suddenly realised how expensive gas is now in the USA, i found myself shaking the hose, I lifted the hose up and drained what i could out of it.
The only reason I know I did this (because it sure wasn't a conscious decision) is because the kid next to me filling up his big, huge, guzzle buddy of a truck said "Hey Mister, what chya doin"?
"Erm ..." I replied.
"Looks kinda funny, you shakin that gazolin hoss n all".
"Yes, yes I expect it does, erm ... I'm just making sure I get the last drop out ... I guess, what with prices now, ha ha" (uncomfortable forced laugh)
His eyebrows raised, he said in disbelief, "Dude, it's not like $20 bucks a gallon, you just shook out, like, what? a nickels worth?" To which all of his friends laughed out loud.
The final insult came as he looked at my BMW and said, "Man, if you can't afford it (nodding his head at my car) you should get a truck - like mine buddy. Now that's gas mileage, gittin like over 9 to the gallon I reckin."
I guess when everyone is shaking the hose it's different.
I'm seriously considering a bicycle.
